When designing a website, it is not always easy to know what to look for, which elements are important and how the website will be received by the masses.

Here we explain 8 of the most important web design basics that will give you a good basis for designing your website.

What are the basics for web design?

The most important thing is the users

A website, and especially the web design, is always created to look as appealing and professional as possible to visitors. Trust in the users must be built up through the content, the structure and the design, so that they like to stay on your website.

User experience (UX) is a very important concept here. The better the user experience, the longer your visitors stay on the website, the more often they come back and the more likely they are to use your services or buy your products. This leads to more traffic.

Furthermore, a good UX is also a ranking factor for Google, which is why Google will rank websites higher as soon as a lot of traffic is generated through good UX.

Here you get an overview of the topic web design

Work search engine optimised

Search engine optimisation is the be-all and end-all of a website if you want it to rank highly, generate traffic and make more sales.

Search engine optimisation or SEO means that search engines such as Google specify various factors according to which your website must be designed. If this is done, the website will rank higher on Google than others. These factors include the aforementioned UX, optimal loading speed and keyword-optimised content.

Less is more

"Less is more" should be the motto of every web designer. Whether it's the body text, the choice of colours or the typography. Too much of everything causes the user to be overwhelmed and to leave the page.

Don't fill each of your sub-pages with continuous text and please don't forget to include an eye-catcher here and there (table, image, video, etc.).

Web designers should also always be careful when choosing colours. Two to three colours besides white for the entire website are quite sufficient at this point. In the best case, these chosen colours are already present in the company's logo.

It is the same with typography. No more than two different fonts should be used on the website so as not to appear amateurish. These fonts must of course be legible for everyone, not too small and not too large.

The typography and thus also your written content support the communication with your users. If this communication does not work, visitors will not understand your content and your company. You want to avoid this in any case.

In general, as a web designer, you should be careful not to fill the entire web design with irrelevant content or follow every trend that exists on the internet. Too many moving elements, fancy designs or experimental layouts do not build trust and look unprofessional.

Match design and content to the target group

To tailor the web design and content to your target audience, you first need to know who your target audience is. Think about what your company represents and which groups of people this should appeal to.

Your entire website, i.e. the typography style, the design, the choice of media and the colours, must fit this target group. In addition, if they are younger people, you are welcome to address them as "du". If you are addressing an older audience, please use their first name.

Website must be easy to use

In line with the user experience, websites must not only look appealing, but of course also be easy to use. Complicated websites that don't offer what the user is looking for will be abandoned immediately.

A clear and simple website structure plays an important role here. Don't overcrowd your pages with continuous text, highlight important elements (in colour), make sure that your navigation is easy to find and simple to use, and offer micro-interactions and interactive content.

To ensure communication between visitors and the company, the owner's contact details must also be easy to find. Most operators place this in the footer.

Thinking about accessibility

Web designers must never forget accessibility when designing websites. Accessible web design is especially about making it accessible to all people. This is especially important so that people with disabilities in particular can perceive and understand the contents of a website in the same way as people without disabilities.

This is achieved, for example, by providing subtitles, audio descriptions or sign language for videos. You should also include screen readers, read aloud functions and spoken descriptions of images in your web design. In addition, make your content available in easy language and provide enough contrast between text and background colour.

Interactive web design

Making web design interactive is always a great way to improve the user experience on websites. By including interactive content, users are integrated into the web design and they can actively participate in the site.

The advantages of interactive elements are, for example, a higher attention of the users and a better communication of the content to the users. It also leads to users spending more time on your website, which in the best case brings you more profit, because the probability increases that users will make use of your products or services.

Responsive web design development

The digital age naturally brings with it smartphones and tablets, which is why it is impossible to imagine everyday life without them. For this reason, most users now prefer to go online and read articles on their smartphone rather than on a computer.

It is therefore all the more important that designers ensure during website development that there is not only a desktop version of the website, but also a mobile one. The presentation of websites is different for mobile devices than for a laptop screen.

Mobile version means that the web design adapts to the screen, no matter how big or small it is. Any information media, content, fonts and sizes, colours or any interactive element must be displayed without problems and function properly.

Conclusion

When it comes to web design, the most important things are a well thought-out structure, ease of use for everyone and a good user experience. If you always keep these three elements in mind during the design process, your website will be a complete success.
